Jinna Good morning, this is Jinna Pak of His Story of History FM. A radio show which brings the famous figures such as Newton, Darwin, and Einstein BACK from the dead for us to interview and get to know them in a way no one else did before. How is this possible? How can we communicate with someone like Newton who is dead hundreds of years ago? The His Story of History FM is sponsored by the St. Plouffe's Academy of Modern Science. With the Academy's latest, cutting-edge-technology, and a bit of DNA, we are able to bring back the dead temporarily by cloning them.
Yes. And this morning, we have a very special guest. The Father of Modern Observational Astronomy, the Father of Modern Physics, the Father of Modern Science!!
Please welcome Mr. Galileo Galilei!!
(clap clap clap)
Andrew Thank you. Thank you.
Jinna Such an honour to meet you Mr. Galilei. I am a big fan. You are a great inspiration for many students at the St. Plouffe's Academy.
Andrew Thank you.
Jinna Now, can you tell us a little about yourself?
Andrew I was born is Pisa, Italy in 1564. I made my first telescope in 1609.
Jinna Really? I thought telescopes were invented by the Dutch.
Andrew Yes. But those pathetic telescopes could only magnify up to three times. My new telescope could magnify objects up to twenty times.
Jinna Did this telescope help you in contributing to Modern Science?
Andrew Very much. With this telescope, I was able to look at the moon, and discover little details such as sunspots. My discovery, proved and supported the Copernican System immensely.
Jinna Copernican System? What is that?
Andrew The Copernican System or Heliocentrism, back in my days, was a revolutionary theory, dangerous enough to get scientists punished. Which states that the Earth and the other planets circle around the sun.
Jinna But wasn’t the sun always the centre of the universe? I don’t see how that’s revolutionary or dangerous.
Andrew Prior to the Copernican System, everyone thought that the universe was geocentric. Meaning that the sun revolved around the Earth. My belief in the Copernican System got me into trouble eventually with the Catholic Church.
Jinna The Catholic Church got involved? This is so confusing. Why is the Church interfering in science?
Andrew A committee of consultants declared to inquisition that Copernican proposition, that the sun is the centre of the universe was a heresy.
Jinna What is a heresy?
Andrew Heresy, is a belief or opinion contrary to the Christian doctrine.
And because I supported the Copernican System, I was warned by Cardinal Bellarmino under Order of Pope Paul V, that I should not defend the Copernican theories. In 1624, I was assured by Pope Urban VIII, that I could write about Copernican theory as long as I treated it as a mathematical proposition.
Jinna So you were able to talk about the heliocentric theory, as long as it was considered mathematical.
Andrew That’s right. However with the printing of my book, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, I was called to Rome in 1653 facing inquisition again. I was found guilty of heresy for my dialogue, and was sent to my home near Florence, where I was to be under house arrest for the remainder of my life.
Jinna That is so cruel!
Andrew In 1658, the inquisition allowed me to move to my home in Florence, so that I could be closer to my daughters. And in 1642, I died at my home, outside Florence.
Jinna Thank you Mr. Gelilei, for that very detailed mini biography of yours.
Mr. Galilei, was a famous physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher. Mostly noted for playing a major role in the scientific revolution, such as the Solar System and the telescope.
Andrew Thank you.
Jinna Mr. Galilei, you are called in our time, as the Father of Modern Science. How do you feel about that?
Andrew It’s great. I am delighted that I am credited for my discoveries, and it really makes me feel that I made a contribution to Modern Science.
You see, back in the 16th and the 17th century, my accomplishments weren’t thought of as contributions, but an act against Christianity and God, as I explained before.
Jinna Speaking of religion and science, what is your opinion Mr. Galilei about the 2 very different, yet very closely related subjects.
Andrew Well, me, being a scientist, I believe that the condition, the right or wrong of a scientific theory should only be justified in by science. It just makes more sense!
Jinna So you believe religion and science should be dealt separately?
Andrew Absolutely. Well, I wish that the Church would understand. Many fellow scientists that support the Copernican System and many other theories that the Church might dislike, have absolutely no intention of fighting the church or the law of God. In fact, many of us are all Christians.
Jinna I don’t understand.
Andrew I defend heliocentrism. But I do not believe that heliocentrism is contrary to the scriptures in the Bible such as:
“the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved.”
“the Lord set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.”
I believe that we should believe these scriptures, but don’t take them literally. For the scriptures in the Bible is a book of poetry and songs, not a book of instructions or history.
Jinna and for the writers of the Bible wrote from the perspective of the terrestrial world, and from that vantage point the sun does rise and set. In fact, it is the earth's rotation which gives the impression of the sun in motion across the sky.
Andrew Indeed.
Jinna Well. I’m afraid it is time for us to say good bye now.
Andrew Yes, it was great fun to be here with you all.
Jinna In a few minutes, this clone of Galileo will rot and we’ll have to say good bye. Thank you Mr. Galilei, that was a very educational chat. And lastly, thank you for listening to Jinna Pak’s His Story of History FM. See you later!!
